Stunning from everywhere you see it, the celebration of Deepa Sheth and Caleb Maki felt less like a wedding and more like the closing chapter of a love story that almost didn’t happen — and somehow became one for the ages.
An Unlikely Beginning
They met on a dating app, worlds apart in every practical sense — she a radiologist spending her days in hospitals, he a marketing manager working from home. A first date turned into a five-hour gelato walk along the Chicago riverwalk that neither of them wanted to end. What followed was a long-distance courtship carried across time zones, late-night calls, and the kind of persistence that only happens when two people already sense something rare.
A year later, on a trip to Italy, Caleb proposed on the cliffs of Positano — an elaborate surprise involving hidden rings, a co-conspirator flown in from the UK, and a hotel staff sworn to secrecy. The ring itself carried its own quiet meaning, chosen to honor the memory of Deepa’s mother, who had passed years earlier. It was a proposal built not just on romance, but on remembrance.
A Wedding Meant to Feel Close, Not Big
From the very beginning, Deepa and Caleb knew their wedding would not be about scale. With just 35 guests, every decision was made in service of intimacy — of making sure the people who mattered most could feel the full weight of the celebration up close. After exploring more than a dozen properties across multiple trips, they found their setting in the cliffs and ocean views of Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal — a location that felt, in their words, unlike anywhere else they had seen.
What followed was three days of celebration weaving together Hindu and Christian traditions — a mehendi paired with garba, a Christian ceremony honoring Caleb’s heritage, and a Hindu ceremony and reception celebrating Deepa’s. Nothing was left untouched by intention, down to the mirrored mandap and the effort to recreate the flavors of home through dishes made completely from scratch for guests thousands of miles from where those recipes began.
The Aisle, the Ocean, and the Moment Everything Changed
There is a moment every love story eventually arrives at — and for Caleb, it happened as Deepa walked toward him, violin notes rising over the sound of waves breaking against the cliffs below. It was, by his own account, the moment that made sense of everything that came before it.
By the time evening fell, the celebration had transformed once more — a reception built around a shared love of classic elegance, complete with a cinematic entrance that captured both their personalities: playful, intentional, and unmistakably their own.
A Story Worth Telling
Their wedding was later featured in The Nod Magazine, where Deepa and Caleb reflected on the journey that brought them to that cliffside ceremony — a story that began on an app neither of them expected much from, and ended with two families from opposite sides of the world, standing together at the edge of the Pacific.
